This computer is not running genuine windows 0x8004fe21

windows activation

This solution is the only one worked for me… restoring windows to an earlier point did not work for me. So try the following

1) Click Start button.
2) Type:
CMD.exe
into the ‘Search programs and files’ field
3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
4) Type:
net stop sppsvc
(It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
5) Type:
cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
6) Type:
rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
7) Type:
cd %windir%\system32
8) Type:
net start sppsvc
9) Type:
slui.exe
10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

  1. I keep getting “access is denied” command on the CMD after I type suli.exe
I did everything the instruction said to do but it still keeps coming up

  2. Kenneth–you will need to right click the CMD file and select “Run as Administrator”.

I just tried this solution and it worked. Thanks so much!

    1. I guess you didn’t run as Administrator.
either right click and choose run as administrator or run pressing ctrl + shift + enter.

  3. BTW, Kenneth above has typed “suli.exe” not “slui.exe” on the comments. If he has typed that in the cmd prompt it might not be helping his cause much.

  4. Was getting activation popups after cloning old drive to new ssd. Microsoft Support remote viewed and ran the gamut of tools and messing around, but every tool still said activated and the activation popups persisted.

    This fixed it.

  5. I should say that I thought getting the “this computer is not running genuine windows” window was malware, not the instructions. Sorry!

  6. It has been years since I used the cmd prompt. I initially had some errors. I found that by keeping this page open next to the cmd box, I was able to copy and paste to get the correct syntax.

I have been fighting this for days. MS Support didn’t fix it. I think you did. Thanks!

  7. I tried this fix and then restarted my pc. I looked at my system info and at where it says Windows Activation and below it it says “3 days until automatic activation. Activate Windows now” which is a link. When I click the link it pops up a window saying “The Windows 7 Professional product key you typed is invalid for activation” then gives me 3 choices : Buy a new product key online, Type a different product key, or Contact Lenovo to help resolve this problem. Btw I wasn’t asked to type in my product key after putting in your fix, but it still list the Product ID right under the link below where it says windows activation. Not sure yet if the genuine windows error will appear anymore or not it takes time for it to appear if it will appear at all. Wondering if everything will be ok in 3 days when automatic activation occurs.

  8. Awesome! So easy to do, make sure you run as an administrator and it works perfectly! And it said my activation was successful. Nicely done 🙂

  9. Hi,

i have tried and it works the moment i have done. but after some time again the popup comes.what could be the solution for the same.i am using windows 7 64 bit pro.

  10. I had the same problem and it was driving me nuts.
After trying many things this is what happened..
I followed the above advice but ended up with a warning on the bottom right of my desktop saying that my copy of Win7 was not genuine (and possibly a counterfeit or something similar)
    Long story short..
Start>right click computer>properties>bottom of the page find Windows Activation then click ‘Change product key’
I then re entered the Windows 25 character key that as under my HP laptop and hey presto.. fixed.
I still dislike Apple more than anyone but Microsoft is starting to annoy me !

  11. Didn’t work for me…… Typed in the “%windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform” and got a ‘the system cannot find the path specified’ error. It indicated that the Software Protection Service was not started. This has been driving me nuts thru multiple contacts w/Microsoft. Any suggestions for an alternate path? Help is SINCERELY appreciated!!

  12. Worked perfectly!! Saved me from a lot of aggravation and $$$ for repair work. “MUCHAS GRACIAS””
